Henkel Expands Electro‑Ceramic Coating (EC2) Capabilities in Shanghai, China

Shanghai – (BUSINESS WIRE) – Henkel has opened a new processing and testing laboratory in Shanghai, China, dedicated to Electro‑Ceramic Coating (EC2) technology for the Asia‑Pacific region. The lab will serve customers seeking to replace traditional corrosion‑resistant coatings with EC2, as well as those looking to leverage new high‑performance benefits such as reduced friction and lower emissions in internal combustion engines. The 100‑square‑meter facility is located within Henkel’s Asia‑Pacific R&D Center in Shanghai and features world‑class infrastructure. Led by a team of experienced technical experts, it will develop and test EC2 coatings tailored to meet specific customer requirements.

Henkel already operates three EC2 laboratories worldwide, located in Detroit (USA), Düsseldorf (Germany), and Yokohama (Japan). The new Shanghai lab will enable rapid delivery of customized coating processes aligned with the specific needs of local customers in China and the Asia‑Pacific region. Henkel’s fully equipped Analytical Center is also available on‑site to conduct performance and analytical property testing.

What is EC2?

EC2 is a high‑performance, multi‑functional, environmentally friendly coating designed for light metals such as aluminum, magnesium, titanium, and their alloys. It is suitable for use on cost‑effective lightweight metals as an alternative to steel and other materials. Testing has confirmed that EC2 provides superior heat resistance, chemical resistance, and excellent corrosion protection. With strong paint adhesion, EC2 can also be used as a base coat.

New high‑performance benefits of EC2 include reduced friction, improved wear resistance, and lower emissions in internal combustion engines.

Applications

EC2 technology is used in a wide range of applications, including outboard motors, automotive engine pistons, EGR and turbo components, HVAC equipment, small engine pistons, pumps and valves, kitchen appliances, lighting fixtures, and numerous parts across various industries.

Significance

Henkel will use the new EC2 processing and testing laboratory to develop lighter, more environmentally friendly solutions that help customers achieve fuel efficiency and emission reduction goals. The facility strengthens Henkel’s technical capabilities in the Asia‑Pacific region and provides strong support for customers’ innovative processes. With this lab, Henkel can respond more quickly to customer needs and deliver greater value.

George Kazantzis, Vice President of Henkel’s Automotive & Metals business in Asia‑Pacific, stated: “Our commitment to being the preferred design partner and solution provider for our customers remains unwavering. We are pleased to strengthen this commitment by offering the latest innovative coating technologies.”
